de Graeve from Herentals (Belgium) was a ver y gifted
portrait maker and besides that he painted as well. He
died quite young but recently had an exposition on which
there were drawings besides oil paintings.
Presented here is his signature but this work has also been
signed on the back of this work.
This is a nice sketch, presumably for a later work in oil.
Though only a few colours have been used it certainlyhas atmosphere. We immediately liked it!
Watercolour, heightened with chalk.
Work on paper. Dimensions: 40 - 60 cm.
At first this signature was very obscure but
thanks to the RKD (Institute for Art documentation
in the Hague) they maybe solved this problem.
It should say "Greeve". (1850 - 1923) but
we still doubt that. Moreover the quality of Johannes
Greeves'other work isn't that convincing nor
comparable to this one.
Grimberg (?)
