Pierre Roy / Henry Rul / Otto von Ruppert / Russian Art

Pierre Roy has been calles the father of Surrealism, yet is
all but unknown to the general public. His very personal,
extraordinary haunting work was championed by the sur-
realists in Paris in the 1920s and then later by the American
vanguard in the thirties. This is an early work probably ment
as an illustration. Work on paper. Dimensions: 20 / 30 cm.

As a whole it was a nice encadrement and for that
reason I've included this picture

Signed with his monogramme and dated 1905.

Henry Rul

On the particular auction where we bought this painting there
were several works by Henry Rul. That is the reason I called it
a Henry Rul. In fact it could as well be a genuine work from
his hand as the brushstrokes and the way the trees are done
are quite similar in his other works. Impressionistic indeed.
Oil on canvas. Dimensions: 42 / 54 cm.

Of course the prefix "R" is there but what is left is an
unidentifiable bunch of numbers, marks, you name it…

A nice crayon from his hands must be this one. The light
works beautiful through the trees and the reflections in the
water have been done very convincing. In this work the
influence of Henri Luijten absolutely is there. Work on
paper. Dimensions: 35 / 50 cm.

Presented here is a picture of his signature though I
think you can find better examples on the internet.

Otto von Ruppert (1841 - 1923)

This "higher end" German artist is responsible for this
nice painting. This work has been auctioned in Germany
two times before we were able to buy it in Belgium.
It has a kind of oriental character but the exact place
has to be investigated yet. We will come up with
the correct place we hope. Oil on canvas sticked on
cardboard. Dimensions: 20,5 / 35,5 cm.

His signature is a bit hard o read but once you know
what has to be there, it becomes clear. The addition
behind his name says pinxt which means "made by".
Most likely the place depicted here is somewhere along
the river Nile in Egypt where Otto von Ruppert is
known to have worked.

RUSSIAN ART

A nicely done Social Realism work from de Sovjet States.
It can be Polish as well, anyway: Eastern Europe based.
Nice colors but one remark can be made about the legs
of the man right in the front. A bit too long??

We are presenting this detail as the face of the woman in the
middle has been done with craftsmanship to our belief.

Hands are always difficult to paint but this painter
succeeded and they deserve a more careful examination
as the colors used for hands and face differ a lot
from each other but together are making a harmonic result.

By clicking on this image you can study a kind of stamp
in the lower right corner. The same stamp seems to appear
in the right corner above of this painting.
