A remarkable work by this Spanish artist who lives in
Girona in that sense that the colors seems to be of a
more northern situated country. It also resembles
the early color photographs which gives it a mood
of its' own. Oil on canvas. Dimensions: 19 / 24 cm.
And of course his signature that certainly is "spot on".
Jan and Simon Schaeffer
In fact it is not really clear to me wether if there were
two brothers who both were professional painters or
just one person with the name Jan Simon Schaeffer.
It is said that they worked together and this can be
concluded from the signature that says J.S. Schaeffer.
Some sites proclaim Jan Schaeffers' full name is
Jan Simon Schaeffer but qualities are about the
same. This a rather big work: 60 / 90 cm and has
lots' of details in it. It resembles the style of some
other harbour painters like M. de Jongere ( in
fact Marinus Drulman) and Evert Moll.
This central placed boat could be a Freight ship of the
Holland America Line what makes it a great plus of
course. This is undoubtly the Rotterdam harbour.
And of course some nice details.
As a lot of small details resemble the way M. De Jongere
worked it could be as well that these two brothers made at
least some of their paintings for M. De Jongere. There
were more popular painters that worked this way and
it is in fact not that unusual. In the guitar making world
the same thing is happening a lot!
Giving depth in their paintings these artist often
painted the background in a light greyish color.
A painting signed S. Schaeffer is put up for auction here
above. The difference in quality is apparent, possibly because
our work appears to be of a more recent date.
It appears to be the same boat, however!
The signature the clearly shows the prefix "S" at
the beginning.
