J. van Tankeren / A. Tayler / Pierre Thevenet

J. van Tankeren.

Hermanus van Tankeren was a Dutch chicken painter who was
quite succesful in selling his mostly small works on panel.
As I'm living quite near the place where van Tankeren was born
a lot of stories keep popping up about the originality of his
works. It is known here that someone tried to copy his
works and also signed H van Tankeren in which
to my believe the last painting presented here attests.

Even more curious is this one as it represents sheeps
as well, a seldom seen animal on his paintings.
Discussions with a good friend of mine are that
this one is original and mines a fake (the first one)
I do not rate this painter that highly as he makes too many
mistakes regarding perspective in the smaller objects
placed here and there apart from the different
textures he is trying to catch. Oil on panel.
Dimensions: 17 / 23 cm.

Presented here is the signature under the first painting.

Of course we can say a lot about his abilities: His chickens
are OK anyway but not on this falsification. The signature
makes it even more obvious.

A. Tayler

This painting had some damage but is was worth to
bring it back in its' original condition. The atmosphere
in this painting is good and the painting itself dates
already from the Victorian period in which a lot of
these sceneries were depicted.

Another picture, maybe a bit different in light but that
is the problem with this work: Simply hard to catch it
the way it is in reality. Work on canvas maroufled on
a wooden panel. Dimensions: 35,5 / 53,3 cm.

Hardly readable and more than often it happened that
an artist had an agreement with a dealer to have the
exclusive right to sell paintings under one name!
However, an artist could get around such an
appointment by simply signing with another name
or a name that was hardly readable. The last
thing could be the case here.

Pierre Thevenet

One way or another this Belgium based artist reminds us a bit
of the way Maurice Utrillo worked: A kind of childish way but
with a lot of emotion in it. More than often Thevenet is using
the bare canvas as part of his paintings but here he worked in
thicker layers of paint. We liked this way of working more.

Mostly you can divide the way of signing a work in two
categories: The ones done in paint which are mostly done
in capitals. This one is a written in ink. These are somewhat
more flamboyant as is this one. Signing in pencil gives
the same effect! Thevenet is one of the various post
impressionists and certainly not the least one!

Jos Tilleux

One of the first in a long row of Jos Tilleux works as
the grandson of this painter did put a lot of works up for
auction. A whole bunch at a time. Some were not really
worth an investment but this one immediately drew our
attention. It is so colorful en yet the harmony is there!
Work on canvas. Dimensions: 50 / 60 cm

A strange kind of prefix "T" this signature strarts with.

"Play of the sun"  this one has been titled by the painter
himself on the back. Again a great diversity in colors
but that makes it to a remarkable impressionistic work.

As a painter you need to keep up with changes in taste
in order to survive sometimes. He also can work in an
expressionistic way from which this view of (probably)
Lier is a proof. Work on canvas. 40 / 50 cm.

Of course we 're not able to keep all these paintings and
for that reason we're selling some of them to keep things
payable but this one is definitely a keeper for me.
It is the river Meuse near Namur, in fact Wepion.
Work on canvas. Dimensions: 40 / 50 cm.

At first glance this work appears to be painted in a
more uniform way regarding its colors but a good
observation learns that also in this park view Tilleux
makes advantage of his rich color palette.
This one reminds us a bit the way Claude Monet
painted his "Waterlelies and Bridge" in all kind
of different colors green. Another keeper (sigh)
Work on canvas. dimensions: 50 / 60 cm.

The moorland of Kalmthout has been depicted by various artists
Tilleux gives us a fluid example of his landscapes here as well.
In fact you have to experience the richness in colors once you
are actually in front of these paintings.

I've included this one: Again the moorland of Kalmthout but
I bought it for a friend of mine in Spain. Most of the works
presented here are the ones painted later in his career.
That's why I've included the flower painting here below
as Tilleux created that one in 1926. Both oil on canvas.

Some people would make a verdict by mentioning
this a bit goody goody but it shows Tilleux' progression
in later times. Oil on canvas. Dimensions: 60 / 70 cm.

And yet another on from a fiend of mine that has
a lot of atmosphere as well in all its' simplicity.

It was not only France or Italy where Tilleux made a lot
of paintings. This one has been done in Germany and
again the elegancy is there.

And another one in Venice where he catches the evening
light in a superb way! Compare this one to the one here
above. Oil on canvas. dimensions: 40 / 50 cm.

Paul Tondreau

Though not a forefighter for modern art his way of
painting simple landscapes is intriguing.
Oil on canvas. Dimensions 60 / 60 cm.
