Jozseph Csillag (1894-1977) / Ctacewitch (Russian Origin)

Csillag was born in Hungary (Gyorszentmarton) and
died in Budapest. He studied at the academy of Budapest
under master Imre Revesz. He studied and spent years in
Italy and in the thirties he exhibited there as well.
Later he had exhibitions in Belgium (Brussels) and
New York. He received numerous prizes including
the hungarian Munkacsy Prize. His paintings are
in the permanent collection of Sweden (Stockholm)
and the Netherlands among others.

The problem with some paintings offered for auction is
that he only later in his career painted with a more
impressionistic approach and that is what makes this
painting so interesting. Apart from this impressionistic
approach, the subjects are more close than in his earlier
work and last but not least, the light in this painting
suggest a really hot summer day in august.
Csillag often painted on canvases that had the
dimensions 60 / 80 cm with which he felt most
comfortable. Oil on Canvas / Maroufle.

Ctacewitch

This painting came to us being apparently cut out
of it's frame. Because just a piece of canvas offers
little protection and is prone to damages of any kind
I decided to stick it on a wooden panel.
This style is called "social realism" though in fact
it is an expressionistic approach of people on the
run for a battle. Soldiers, citizens and children side by
side. Oil on canvas / panel. Dimensions 30 - 65 cm.

Presented here is the central detail.

And a detail from the right side where a horse
stands at the riverside.
