Edmond van de Vyvere ( 1880 - 1950 ) / Wallin

Edmond van de Vyvere

This painter is responsible of depicting various spots in Oudenaarde
(Belgium) A lot of places have disappeared there so from a historical
point of view this painter also plays an important role in the history
of that city. But this painting was very dirty as can be seen here.
This painter has a kind of vulnerable style: No wild brush strokes
but a kind of serenity that is present in most of his works.

Properly cleaned we are able to present it again and even
the marks in the air have disappeared now. This part of
the river Schelde has disappeared in favor of an extended
straight course for the bigger boats. At first I was a bit
disappointed about the cleaning result as I expected it
to be more blue coloured. However I had contact with
his granddaughter who sended me a beautiful catalogue
in which drawings, etches and oil paintings are presented.
They all seem to posses a kind of dreamy ocher coloring
which is present in this work as well. The craftsmanship
of van de Vyvere is not only present in the moods his
paintings have: The calm water, in which no effects
are added, is depicted in a very refined manner!
Oil on canvas. Dimensions: 55 / 55 cm.

Hereby I really want to thank Edmonds' granddaughter
Francoise van de Vyvere for sending us the catalogue
about her grandfather Edmond van de Vyvere at no cost!
On page 26 the same spot is presented but in a bigger format:
Oil on canvas. Dimensions: 75 / 90 cm. Private collection.

This is "the second one". A bit more detailed and of course
the foreground has been worked out more. For me it wouldn't
have been necessary. This spot is called "Smallendam".

Wallin.
